Alabama & Abroad: Nadia Harden’s Journey to Citizen Diplomacy

Nadia began self-studying Korean in 2018 and became interested in its history and culture. She also began to learn more about careers in diplomacy, and realized that she wanted to take her language learning seriously and needed to immerse herself in the language and culture.
Even with several years of self-study, Nadia admits that she was initially terrified of moving to Korea – her first time outside the United States without her parents. She notes that she was still a beginner in Korean, not great with directions, but full of eagerness for new opportunities. Her time in South Korea solidified her interests in foreign policy and politics. Her visit to the demilitarized zone was particularly important for Nadia.
Nadia attributes her NSLI-Y experience with improving her courage, noting that “Without NSLI-Y I wouldn’t have had the courage or drive to pursue a career in public diplomacy. Studying abroad in South Korea gave me experiences that encouraged curiosity and flexibility; attributes I have been able to use to further myself professionally and academically.”
After completing NSLI-Y, Nadia began college at Oakwood University where she studies international relations. She has interned at Global Ties Alabama, which gave her an advanced understanding of citizen diplomacy and worked with foreign guests through the International Visitor Leadership Program to introduce them to Huntsville, Alabama. She also interned at the White House Visitors Office, where she helped orchestrate large-scale public events including the 2024 White House Easter Egg Roll, the Japan and Kenya State Arrival Ceremonies, White House Tours, and Garden Tours. She found her Korean proficiency helpful when interacting with guests at the White House! Most recently, Nadia was selected as an Expo 2025 Osaka Youth Ambassador for the U.S. Pavilion.
