Languages and Programs
In 2010 and 2011 the NSLI-Y program is offering American youth opportunities to study seven languages in a variety of formats. Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Turkish will be taught in three program models: summer programs (six to eight weeks), semester (fall or spring) programs, and full academic year programs. Persian will be offered only for summer programs. Participants may apply for the program length that suits their needs.
Here are the programs offered through the National Security Language Initiative NSLI for Youth.

Program Schedule
Summer programs last six to eight weeks and run from mid to late June to early August. All students will be enrolled in language classes, and each program will include an element of community service.
The semester and academic year programs offer classes at a local high school in the host country that will immerse the NSLIY student in a school with native speakers, with a similar array of subjects to that found in most American high schools. Supplemental lessons in the language of the host country will be offered in addition to the regular high school enrolment. The program will last from three to five months in the case of the semester program and eight to eleven months, in the case of the year program. Participation in a community service opportunity may be offered.
Community service-based programs may be offered at the discretion of the placing organization, to students who have graduated high school or cannot enroll in school in the country they choose due to age or other restrictions in local schools. All community service students will be placed in a community service project and will take language courses to supplement their learning during their program.
Classes and programs are subject to change.
