The Hindi summer program will provide instruction on all four language skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening - but will focus on speaking and listening. Upon completion of the program, students will be familiar with the Devanagari alphabet and possess an understanding of Hindi grammar and the different dialects of Hindi. The program will employ carefully designed learning activities, to highlight the rich culture of India, as well as opportunities to explore the cultural context of the language, including Indian crafts, music, and dance, not to mention yoga and Bollywood!

Program Dates: Summer programs last six to eight weeks and typically start in mid-June to early July and end in early to mid-August.

Good to know: Indians widely consider Mahatma Gandhi to be the father of the nation. His birthday, October 2, is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and world-wide as the International Day of Nonviolence.
The Hindi academic year program seeks to significantly increase students’ Hindi vocabulary and their ability to communicate with confidence. The program offers a combination of intensive in-class language instruction, extracurricular activities customary to Indian culture, and a host family experience. Outings and activities provide students with opportunities to communicate with the local community in different environments, and exposes students to the historical and cultural heritage of India, the diversity of its regions and peoples, as well as various components of modern-day Indian society. Cultural activities may include yoga, dance, traditional music, and volunteer experiences in local schools.

Good to know: Given the cultural diversity of India, Hindi academic year participants will likely have the opportunity to celebrate several holidays and festivals throughout the year. Participants may also have the opportunity to attend a traditional Indian wedding, which are known for their great size and celebratory traditional dance.
Fun fact! Hindi is the world’s 4th most widely-spoken language in the world! Today, Hindi is spoken in a number of countries outside of India, including Nepal, Fiji, Mauritius, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, and Guyana.
All participants will be required to participate in pre-program language learning programs, as guided by their implementing organization. All participants will be required to complete a pre-program survey, pre-program language assessments (if requested), and several post-program surveys and language tests.
