Arabic Summer Program
Hosting Locations: Jordan, Egypt, or Morocco
Program Dates: Six to eight weeks, starting in mid- to late-June and ending in late July/early August
Class Hours: 120 hours
Accommodation: Host families or a combination of group housing and host family stays
Academic program: The summer Arabic program seeks to significantly increase students’ Arabic vocabulary and their ability to communicate with confidence in the target language. Program curriculum is designed to facilitate, through immersion and intensive learning, the equivalent of one year of Arabic instruction at a U.S. university. All programs include instruction in Modern Standard Arabic. Classes in the colloquial dialect will also be offered to help students with everyday communication. Depending on program location, participants will be able to apply classroom learning while exploring the ruins at Petra, touring the Pyramids at Giza or bargaining at Marrakech's souks!
Good to know: Students live with host families from all walks of life and socio-economic levels. Local people enjoy dressing up, so participants should be prepared to look sharp and dress conservatively. Young women do not need to wear a veil or hijab. In 2012, Ramadan begins on July 20, so participants in each country will have the honor of witnessing the holy month first-hand.

Arabic Academic Year Program
Hosting Locations: Egypt, Morocco
Program Dates: late August/early September to early summer
Class Hours: 15 to 20 hours per week
Accommodation: Host families
Academic program: The academic year Arabic program seeks to significantly increase students’ Arabic vocabulary and their ability to communicate with confidence in the target language. Instruction will be offered in reading, writing, listening and speaking Modern Standard Arabic. Classes in the colloquial dialect will be offered to help students with everyday communication with their host families, at school, and in the community. Participants will have opportunities to put their language skills to use through community service, art classes, music performances, and presentations.
Good to know: Both Egypt and Morocco offer an exciting mix of cultures. In Egypt, participants will experience modern Islam and Christianity as well as Middle Eastern folk cultures with Western culture. Morocco sits at the crossroads of three cultures: Arabic, European and Berber. You’ll often hear people using French, Arabic and Berber all in one sentence! Young women do not need to wear a veil or hijab in either location.
